British-Albanian pop star Dua Lipa, 30, has filed a lawsuit against electronics giant Samsung seeking £11 million in damages. The singer accuses the company of using her image on TV packaging worldwide without her permission.
According to court documents filed in California, Samsung featured a photo of Dua Lipa backstage at the Austin City Limits Festival 2024 on cardboard TV boxes. The singer claims she was not informed or consulted about the use of her image in this mass marketing campaign.
Dua Lipa states that she has “no say, control, or input whatsoever” over the use of the photograph and only became aware of its use after the products were already available in stores.
The Grammy-winning artist’s lawsuit alleges copyright infringement, trademark violations, and breaches of California publicity laws. She is seeking $15 million (£11 million) in damages, arguing that Samsung’s actions falsely suggested an official partnership between the singer and the brand.
Her legal team also criticised Samsung for being “dismissive and callous” when requests were made to remove the image from the packaging.
The complaint includes social media posts from customers who purchased Samsung TVs believing Dua Lipa endorsed the products. Lawyers emphasise that Dua Lipa has developed a “premium brand” and is highly selective with endorsements, making the unauthorized use of her likeness harmful to her reputation.
Despite the ongoing lawsuit, Dua Lipa continues her career momentum. She recently made a surprise appearance at London’s O2 Arena during Tame Impala’s headline show. Additionally, she enjoyed holidays in Copenhagen and South Africa with her fiancé Callum Turner, with wedding plans reportedly scheduled for later this year.
