Four men have been jailed for opening fire on two victims during a failed robbery at a cannabis factory in Doncaster. The violent incident took place on Bentley Road on 18 August 2021.
Paul Oates, 40, Callum Rogers, 27, Oliver Jebson, 28, and Samuel Jebson, 25, travelled from Rotherham to Doncaster to carry out the attack. During the robbery, they stabbed one victim before shooting him in the abdomen, causing life-threatening injuries. The second victim, aged 24, was also shot at but only suffered minor wounds when a bullet struck his phone.
Emergency services quickly responded and rushed both men to hospital for urgent treatment.
At Sheffield Crown Court, the defendants denied the attempted murder charges. However, DNA found on a bullet casing and CCTV footage of the attack provided irrefutable evidence of their involvement. The four men faced charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to kill or injure.
Judge Jeremy Richardson KC condemned the defendants, stating, “None of you gave any evidence at trial, none of you has told the truth. This was a joint enterprise in which you all participated and each of you had that intention to kill.”
The judge acknowledged it was “impossible” to determine who specifically held the gun or knife but was confident all four intended to use deadly weapons during the raid.
After the attack, the group returned to Rotherham, changed clothes, and abandoned their getaway vehicle, a Nissan X-Trail, which was traced back to the Jebson brothers’ address.
Sentences handed down were as follows: Paul Oates received 32 years, while Oliver Jebson, Samuel Jebson, and Callum Rogers were each sentenced to 31 years in prison.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Jones condemned the offenders, saying, “These men acted like thugs and there is no place for them or their actions in our community. Both victims were inches from death. Our team’s tireless work secured justice and ensured these men will be behind bars for years. I hope this verdict brings some closure for the victims.”
