Hampshire County Council has introduced a new 30mph speed limit on the A31 between Winchester and Alresford to avoid traffic chaos similar to the recent port crisis in Kent.
The westbound lane of the A31 now serves as a short-stay triage point for EU-bound freight trucks heading to Portsmouth International Port. At this location, trucks are stopped to verify their ‘border-ready’ paperwork before being allowed entry to the port.
This temporary arrangement aims to keep traffic moving smoothly and prevent delays like those experienced at other ports.
The eastbound lane of the A31 remains open for normal two-way traffic. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for essential journeys along this route.
Hampshire County Council stated, “There’s a new speed limit of 30mph on the A31 between Winchester and Alresford. Please plan ahead and allow extra time.” The council emphasized that these changes are designed to protect both road users and traffic marshals.
