The deadly Bondi Beach terror attack has been revealed as a chilling family tragedy. NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that the two gunmen responsible for the massacre were father and son.
Twenty-four-year-old Naveed Akram remains critically injured in hospital under armed police guard, while his 50-year-old father was shot dead by police at the scene.
Following the Hanukkah massacre, police conducted raids on two Sydney homes located in Campsie and Bonnyrigg Heights. Despite extensive searches, no third gunman was found.
The attack resulted in dozens of injuries, including four children who are in critical condition. Commissioner Lanyon stated, “There were two offenders involved in yesterday’s incident. The offenders are a 50-year-old and 24-year-old male who are father and son.”
It was also revealed that the father held a firearms licence and legally owned six guns. “We recovered six firearms from the scene and the Campsie address,” Lanyon added.
New South Wales Health Minister Ryan Park confirmed the death toll has risen to 16, including one child. He said, “We hope and pray those people get through the next few hours,” referring to the critically injured children.
The attack devastated Sydney’s Jewish community during a Hanukkah event attended by over 1,000 people.
Among those killed was British-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a father of five. Hero bystander Ahmed Al Ahmed fought off one of the attackers, wresting a gun from him but was shot twice and is now fighting for his life in hospital.
Bomb squads discovered several improvised explosive devices in a car linked to the deceased gunman. Authorities are currently working to defuse these threats.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the massacre, calling it “an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism.”
