Hotak Wahidullah, an 18-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, has been sentenced to 10 years in custody after being found guilty of raping a 24-year-old woman in a Wednesbury town centre store.
The attack occurred on 27 February last year when the victim, after a night out, used the shop’s toilet while Wahidullah was present behind the counter.
Birmingham Crown Court convicted Wahidullah of two counts of rape following the incident.
The six-person jury found the evidence against Wahidullah compelling and returned a guilty verdict on both counts of rape, underscoring the seriousness of the offence.
The judge sentenced Wahidullah to a total of 10 years in custody, with seven years to be served in a young offenders’ institution, followed by three years on licence.
During sentencing, the judge noted that Wahidullah poses a considerable risk to public safety.
The attack took place inside a shop located in Wednesbury town centre. The victim had entered the store to use the toilet facilities after an evening out.
