A Northumbria Police officer has been sentenced to 27 months in prison after causing the death of a pensioner through dangerous driving. PC Mark Roberts was responding to an emergency call when the fatal accident occurred.
The incident took place on Dunston Road in Gateshead, where Roberts ran a red light and collided with a motorcycle carrying a married couple. The collision threw both Ronald and Muriel Pinkney into the air, causing serious injuries.
Tragically, 74-year-old Muriel Pinkney died as a result of the crash on July 8, 2022, near the Metrocentre. Her husband, Ronald Pinkney, then aged 77, survived but sustained multiple fractures from the impact.
In February, 57-year-old Mark Roberts from Darlington was found guilty of causing Muriel Pinkney’s death by dangerous driving. He was also found guilty of causing serious injury to Ronald Pinkney.
Today, Teesside Crown Court sentenced Roberts to 27 months imprisonment for his role in the fatal crash.
