Daniel Melhado, a 40-year-old burglar from Tudor Walk, Walcot, Swindon, has been sentenced to two years and five months in prison following his conviction at Swindon Crown Court on Friday, February 28.
Melhado admitted to breaking into a property on Devizes Road on January 13, where he stole a handbag. He then attempted to use the bank cards taken from the bag at an off-licence located on Victoria Road.
PC Charlie Forster, the officer leading the investigation, condemned Melhado’s criminal actions, stating, “Melhado is a prolific burglar who targeted the victim’s home when they weren’t there, stealing items with cold calculation.”
PC Forster added, “Thanks to strong public support, we gathered the evidence needed to convict him.” He emphasized the impact of burglary on victims, saying, “Burglary leaves victims shaken and vulnerable in their own homes. We’re committed to taking offenders like Melhado off the streets to keep Swindon and Wiltshire safe.”
In addition to the prison sentence, Melhado was ordered to pay a £228 surcharge. Wiltshire Police continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity by calling 101, or 999 in urgent situations.
This sentencing serves as a clear message that burglars in Swindon will face serious consequences for their crimes.
