Mohammad Baghdadi “Baggy” Khan, a 25-year-old newly elected Green Party councillor for Bolton’s Halliwell ward, has sparked outrage after sharing videos of himself driving a £270,000 Lamborghini Huracán Spyder. The clip, posted on social media, sharply contrasts with the Green Party’s environmental principles and fuel efficiency policies, leading to widespread online criticism.
Khan’s Lamborghini is powered by a 5.2-litre V10 petrol engine that delivers under 20 miles per gallon, which conflicts with the Green Party’s efforts to restrict fossil-fuelled vehicles and promote lower speed limits to improve fuel economy. His social media posts attracted numerous accusations, with many calling him a hypocrite and questioning his dedication to green policies.
Hanif Alli, leader of Bolton’s Green group, responded to the controversy by explaining that the video was taken at a family wedding in 2023 and that the Lamborghini did not belong to Khan personally. Alli compared hiring a Lamborghini for a celebration to British traditions of using luxury cars such as Rolls-Royce or Bentley, suggesting that the public backlash was overblown.
Despite the controversy, Khan’s Instagram account shows a lifestyle that includes a Mercedes AMG E63s, designer accessories, and international holidays to countries like Pakistan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Reports indicate that his local campaign focused more on international political issues than environmental concerns, prompting speculation that Khan joined the Green Party for reasons unrelated to environmentalism.
