A Cheltenham man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after fatally stabbing 37-year-old Bledi Petraj during a violent altercation in Enfield.
On Sunday, 4 February, police and London Ambulance Service responded to reports of a stabbing on Queen Elizabeth’s Drive, Enfield. They discovered Bledi Petraj, who was from Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, suffering from serious knife wounds. Despite urgent medical efforts by paramedics and hospital staff, Petraj tragically died later that afternoon.
Petraj’s family, devastated by the loss, received support from specialist officers as they mourned the fatal incident.
Kozma Papa, aged 22, from Fairview Road, Cheltenham, was arrested the same day in Hertfordshire after police stopped a vehicle. He was charged with murder the following day. Another man, aged 30, who was arrested during the investigation, was subsequently released without charge.
At the Central Criminal Court on Friday, 6 December, Papa pleaded guilty to murder and possession of a bladed article. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years to serve, alongside a concurrent nine-month sentence for carrying a blade.
Detective Sergeant Matthew Goode, who led the investigation, said: “This was a fight that ended in a senseless loss of life. Papa will now rightly spend a significant amount of time in prison. My thoughts remain with Bledi’s family and loved ones.”
The conviction underscores the persistent problem of knife violence affecting London and communities across the country. Authorities hope the severe sentence will serve as a strong deterrent against carrying and using knives on the streets.
