Kent Police carried out a major operation targeting human trafficking and modern slavery in nail bars and car washes across Canterbury on July 29-30, 2021. The initiative was conducted in partnership with Canterbury City Council, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS), the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, and the charity Stop the Traffik.

The taskforce visited 20 local nail bars and car washes, engaging directly with more than 80 workers and managers. During these visits, they provided important advice about workers’ legal rights and how to identify signs of slavery and exploitation. Victims and witnesses were offered safe spaces to speak confidentially with officials.

As part of the operation, KFRS issued a prohibition notice on one property due to safety breaches, demonstrating a strict stance against unsafe and illegal working environments.

Sergeant Lee Thompson from Kent Police’s Community Safety Unit said, “Kent Police is determined to protect the most vulnerable in our society and will repeat these efforts regularly. We want workers to know their rights and who to contact if they suspect modern slavery.”

Cllr Joe Howes, Canterbury City Council’s housing lead, commented, “This project helped us uncover intelligence on properties in poor or unsafe conditions, often linked with forced labour. We’ll be following up and working with colleagues across districts to tackle these issues.”

If you suspect modern slavery, Kent Police urge you to report it immediately by calling 101 or 999 in an emergency. Reports can also be made online via the Kent Police website. For confidential advice, contact The Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700.
