Jesse Madgwick, a 28-year-old man from Lyndhurst Road, Copnor, was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court on Thursday 19 November after pleading guilty to several offences involving drugs and assaults on police officers.
Madgwick’s legal troubles began on 27 July 2018 in Southsea when police stopped and searched him during an unrelated investigation. The search revealed drug paraphernalia and a large amount of cash.
On 30 September 2018, in the early hours on Market Way, Portsmouth, Madgwick was found carrying a significant quantity of Class A drugs, a large sum of cash, and multiple phones, all indicators of drug dealing activity.
The situation escalated on 24 November 2019 during a domestic incident in Copnor when Madgwick attacked two police officers. One officer was struck with a metal bar and bitten on the hand, sustaining minor injuries, while the other officer suffered swollen, red marks on her face.
Further violence occurred on 8 February 2020. While police were arresting another individual at a separate domestic incident, Madgwick pushed an officer to the ground. Later that evening, while in custody, he kicked another officer in the stomach. Fortunately, none of the officers sustained serious injuries.
Madgwick pleaded guilty to the following charges:
- Three counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker
- One count of obstruction or resisting a constable
- Two counts of involvement in the supply of a Class A drug
- One count of making an offer to supply a Class A drug
- One count of supplying a Class B drug
- Two counts of possessing criminal property
Detective Constable Graham Skull commented, “We take a zero tolerance approach to assaults on our officers, and do not accept that it is simply part of the job. No emergency worker should expect to come to harm while doing their job. As a force, we will continue to work with the CPS to bring those responsible for these awful attacks to justice.”
