Firefighters battled a major blaze at the Phoenix Hotel located off the A414 near North Weald Bassett. The fire started late on Friday night, around 9:05 pm on Epping Road, leading to a significant emergency response.
Ten fire crews responded quickly, deploying an Aerial Ladder Platform, a water bowser, a drone, and an Incident Command Unit. Officers from Essex Fire and Rescue worked swiftly to contain the flames. All guests and staff were evacuated promptly, with no injuries reported.
Area Manager Dan Partridge said: “We are grateful the building was evacuated so efficiently, and no-one suffered any injuries. I would like to praise crews for their hard work in getting the fire under control so quickly. I also thank our crews and partner agencies who supported those affected by relocating them to alternative accommodation.”
The fire engulfed approximately 25% of the hotel but was fully extinguished by 1:30 am on Saturday. Although most fire crews have stood down, some remain on site to monitor the situation. A section of Epping Road remains closed as investigations continue, and drivers are advised to avoid the area and follow diversion signs.
Officials plan to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the fire later today. Firefighters and investigators will collaborate to determine how the blaze started.
Essex Fire and Rescue, along with partner agencies, are providing support and temporary accommodation to those displaced by the fire. The coordinated emergency response helped prevent further damage and ensured the safety of everyone involved.
