Jonathan Smith has officially taken over as London’s Fire Commissioner, following the retirement of Andy Roe earlier this year. Smith now leads the London Fire Brigade (LFB), one of the busiest fire and rescue services in the world.
Smith began his fire service career in 2000 with Norfolk Fire and Rescue. Over more than twenty years, he progressed through the ranks, earning recognition for his practical expertise and strong leadership skills. Prior to his appointment as Commissioner, Smith served as Deputy Commissioner and Director of Operational Preparedness and Response for the LFB.
In his previous roles, Smith was the senior commander at major incidents and directed the Brigade’s strategic response to significant national events, including the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the Coronation of King Charles III.
Commissioner Smith stated, “Andy Roe’s leadership brought vital reforms. I’m committed to building on this strong foundation. The Brigade isn’t complacent – we are ready to protect London’s communities.”
Andy Roe, who dedicated over 20 years to the London Fire Brigade, has moved on to lead a government-backed organisation under the Ministry of Housing focused on building safety reform. Roe is widely credited with transforming the Brigade’s culture and operations following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
Roe received commendations for his calm and effective leadership during numerous complex incidents, establishing his legacy as a pioneering figure in fire and rescue services.
