A former Doncaster prison officer has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for attempting to smuggle illegal drugs and contraband into the prison where he was employed.
Thomas Walls, 26, from Intake, admitted guilt at Sheffield Crown Court to possession with intent to supply Class A and Class B drugs. He also confessed to smuggling List A, B, and C prohibited items into HMP Doncaster.
Walls was arrested in November 2019 after prison staff raised concerns about his suspicious behaviour. CCTV footage captured him leaving and returning with a prison-issued bag filled with wrapped parcels. Subsequent searches uncovered mobile phones, tobacco, lighters, chargers, white powder, spice, and cannabis.
Detective Constable Jon White from Doncaster’s Prison Crime Unit condemned Walls’ actions, stating, “Walls abused his position as a prison officer and now faces a custodial sentence himself. He made repeated efforts to dodge searches, fueling organised crime and putting colleagues at risk daily. We hope this sends a powerful warning to anyone thinking of smuggling into prisons: we’re watching, ready to act.”
John Hewitson, Serco Prison Director at HMP Doncaster, added, “Serco has zero tolerance for breaking the law. We will continue working with police to stop contraband from entering our prisons.”
Thomas Walls was sentenced to five years and seven months in prison, marking a significant fall from grace for the former prison officer.
