Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, the courageous officer exposed to the deadly Novichok nerve agent during the 2018 Salisbury poisoning, has officially retired. His retirement marks the conclusion of a difficult and traumatic period for both him and his family.
Chief Constable Kier Pritchard honoured Nick’s commitment, stating, “I have known and respected Nick for many years as a dedicated colleague and detective.” Nick was among the first officers to respond to the scene in Salisbury, where his life was profoundly affected by the nerve agent attack.
“It is impossible for any of us to fully understand the impact this event has had on Nick and his family,” added Pritchard. He highlighted Nick’s unwavering dedication, mentioning his multiple attempts to return to full duty. “Nick represents the dedication and determination we want to see in police officers nationwide.”
The Chief Constable assured that Nick will always remain a valued member of the Wiltshire Police family and wished him and his family “the greatest success for their future.”
Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson also expressed his respect and support for Nick’s service. “Nick found himself at the centre of an international criminal incident which not only affected his health but changed his family’s lives,” he said.
Macpherson described the Salisbury and Amesbury incidents as “unprecedented,” emphasising that no other UK officer has endured what Nick experienced. He commended the police force’s welfare efforts and expressed hope that Nick’s retirement will bring “some sense of closure” for the family.
“Nick symbolises the dedication and public duty our officers, staff, and volunteers show every day. I wish Nick and his family the very best in the future,” the commissioner added.
After surviving one of the most chilling attacks on UK soil, Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey is stepping away from frontline duty. However, as Chief Constable Pritchard noted, “As one chapter closes, another opportunity will open up for Nick.”
