A Dartford couple celebrating their anniversary had their party interrupted when Kent Police arrived and issued fines to them and three guests for violating lockdown restrictions.
A local woman admitted that only two people lived at the property, with the others visiting illegally during the lockdown period.
This enforcement was part of a broader effort by Kent Police, who issued a total of 74 fixed penalty notices between Friday 5 and Monday 8 March 2021. Officers targeted numerous illegal house parties held to mark birthdays and anniversaries.
More than 30 fines were issued across Sutton Valence, Dartford, Gravesend, and Tonbridge for clear breaches of Government restrictions.
In Canterbury, police broke up a birthday party at a bed and breakfast where three women and three men were found celebrating with banners, balloons, and confetti. All attendees received fines.
In Rochester, members of the public reported a large group socialising in a car park. Police issued fixed penalty notices to partygoers in eight cars.
Additionally, in Canterbury, a resident who had been repeatedly warned about having visitors was finally fined after being caught with a guest indoors.
Assistant Chief Constable Claire Nix said: “So many people in Kent have made huge sacrifices to support the NHS and follow the Government’s guidance. While only a minority break the rules, officers will continue enforcement. Those organising or attending house parties should expect fines. One small meet-up might seem harmless, but it’s not fair on those making sacrifices. Even small gatherings risk spreading the virus to the wider community. There’s light at the end of the tunnel. I urge everyone to be patient and wait for lockdown to ease so we can all enjoy freedom with friends and family soon.”
