Harry Waugh, 26, from Stockton, has been jailed for 30 months following his involvement in violent disorder during the Middlesbrough riots this summer. CCTV footage captured Waugh aggressively throwing missiles at police officers who were protecting themselves with shields.
The footage showed Waugh charging at officers while shouting abuse. Despite being hit in the face by a rock thrown by another rioter, he staggered back and continued his violent actions. Waugh was also recorded attacking another man during a brawl in a nearby park, further escalating the chaos.
Police arrested Waugh after an investigation led by intelligence from Operation Acorn. He pleaded guilty to violent disorder at Teesside Crown Court on December 18. The court sentenced him to two-and-a-half years in prison for his role in the summer unrest that affected the Middlesbrough area.
A Cleveland Police spokesperson condemned the reckless behaviour, stating, “The actions of individuals like Harry Waugh during the Middlesbrough riots were not only reckless but also put officers and members of the public at significant risk. This sentence shows we will not tolerate such behaviour and will continue to bring offenders to justice.”
The investigation into the wider summer riots, which caused extensive damage and disruption across the region, remains ongoing. Police continue to review CCTV footage and gather evidence against other suspects involved in the disorder.
Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information about those involved in the riots. Community support is considered vital in helping police tackle violent disorder and bring more offenders to justice.
