Chichester city centre was thrown into chaos early Friday morning as armed officers from across Sussex responded to an incident near the Cross Monument.

Police quickly cordoned off the area, instructing the public to avoid the vicinity while they managed the dangerous situation.

The HART team, specialist paramedics trained to operate in hazardous zones, were called in to assist Sussex Police during the tense stand-off.

Several police vehicles were also seen in West Street, reinforcing the police presence as authorities worked to resolve the incident.

A Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed that the situation was contained with no threat to the public. They thanked local residents for staying clear of the area and apologised for any disruption caused by the incident.

The incident concluded around 1:20am when officers arrested a 45-year-old man from Chichester on suspicion of affray and possession of a knife in a public place.

He was examined by health professionals before being taken into custody, where he remained as of 8:50am on Friday.
