Hampshire police were compelled to shut down the A33 for a second consecutive day after hundreds of travellers gathered on the busy road between Larkwhistle Farm Road and Woodmancott junction to hold illegal horse and trap races. Large sums of money were reportedly bet on the races, drawing a sizeable crowd.
The road was blocked by multiple 4×4 vehicles and spectators. Several 4x4s surrounded the racing horses and traps, while passengers hung out of the vehicles. Hundreds of onlookers lined the roadside, effectively turning the highway into an impromptu racecourse.
Video footage from Saturday shows bets being placed on the fastest horse and rider. Unfortunately, the ‘winning’ horse sustained a serious injury during the race and required nine stitches. Police adopted a tactical approach to prevent accidents on the highway and alerted RSPCA officials due to concerns about animal welfare.
Authorities seized three vehicles at the scene, and one individual was arrested on suspicion of drug driving in connection with the unauthorised event. Investigations and enforcement actions remain ongoing.
Local MP Steve Brine has expressed serious concerns to Hampshire Police Chief Constable regarding the illegal event and what he perceives as insufficient police intervention. In response, a spokesperson for the traveller community accused the authorities of “racist” treatment towards travellers.
Hampshire police stated: “We have increased our patrols in the area. Officers will engage with those in attendance and take enforcement action where necessary and proportionate. We will deal with any offences and gather evidence to follow up on incidents not immediately resolved.”
