As most lockdown restrictions have now been lifted, London streets are once again bustling with crowds. However, this return to normalcy has coincided with a sharp increase in street robberies involving mopeds and e-scooters. Thieves are speeding through busy areas, snatching phones, wallets, and bags within seconds without stopping.
This type of rapid-hit crime first surged in 2017, leading the Metropolitan Police to establish Operation Venice. This specialised team employs expert tactics to reduce offences, contributing to a year-on-year decline in street robberies. Offenders frequently target individuals distracted by their phones or those leaving valuables unattended on outdoor tables. Recently, there has also been an increase in attacks on people wearing expensive watches.
In response to these threats, the Met Police launched a ‘look up and look out’ campaign to encourage Londoners to remain alert while out and about.
To strengthen efforts, Operation Venice and the Roads and Transport Policing Command will intensify patrols over the next two weeks. They will focus on key crime hotspots and peak times using motorcycles and specialist tactics designed to apprehend thieves in the act.
Detective Chief Superintendent Lee Hill, head of Operation Venice, stated: “Tackling violence in all its forms is our absolute priority. We want to send a clear message to anyone who thinks it’s OK to steal that it will not be tolerated.
“It’s brilliant to see visitors back in the West End after a tough time. We want everyone to enjoy shops, bars, restaurants and cinemas – but safely.
“Many people look down at their phones or wear headphones, carrying valuable items openly. We urge everyone to be vigilant. Please look up and look out.”
“If you witness a crime, call 999 immediately or 101 for non-emergencies. Reporting crimes promptly helps us catch offenders quickly.”
