A skilled UK firefighting team is currently engaged in combating wildfires in Greece, focusing on the Peloponnese area. The team is using chainsaws and hand tools to cut down trees and clear brush, creating vital fire breaks that help protect local village power supplies and prevent the fire from spreading further.
Sky News observed the team working alongside Greece’s National Resilience unit. Utilizing a Sky News drone, the team scanned fire zones and identified advancing flames to better coordinate their efforts. Additionally, drone operators from Lancashire and London Fire Brigades are conducting aerial thermal surveys to detect and monitor hotspots from above.
The firefighting efforts face challenges due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Ilia region of Greece. Wind speed and direction frequently shift, influencing the fire front and requiring constant reassessment of firefighting plans. Before beginning any operation, crews carefully evaluate site risks, weather patterns, and fire behavior to ensure safety and effectiveness.
The 21-member UK team includes firefighters from Merseyside, Lancashire, South Wales, London, and the West Midlands. All team members remain fit and well, rotating shifts to manage heat stress and exhaustion. This deployment came after an official request for assistance from the UK Home Secretary to support Greece’s ongoing firefighting operations.
