Specialist police officers acted swiftly after a drone was spotted dropping a package containing cannabis inside HMP 1. The incident occurred on 21 January 2025 when Kent Police received an urgent tip-off about the illegal delivery.
The discovery of the drugs onboard the drone initiated a detailed forensic investigation aimed at identifying and apprehending the individual responsible for the airborne smuggling operation.
Months later, on 2 October, a significant police raid took place in Plaistow, East London. During the operation, officers seized 50 wraps of suspected cocaine. A 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with smuggling contraband into prison as well as possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.
Following further questioning, the suspect was also charged with a licence breach related to a previous conviction and was returned to custody.
Kent’s Prison Crime Investigation Team, based in Sittingbourne, leads efforts to combat crime across all seven prisons in the county. In 2024 alone, the team has secured over 94 years of prison sentences and a life sentence against offenders involved in prison-related crimes.
Detective Inspector Scott Machin commented on the crackdown: “Criminal activity behind bars doesn’t just affect those inside – it fuels violence and extends criminal networks threatening our communities.”
He added, “By stopping drug smuggling into prisons, we strike at organised crime’s core and help keep our streets safer.”
Detective Inspector Machin also highlighted the strong collaboration with local prisons, stating, “We have an excellent relationship with local prisons and share a strong commitment to protecting the public.”
