Comic-Con Predator Jailed for 16 Years After Sickening Child Abuse
A 49-year-old man has been locked up for 16 years for the horrific sexual abuse of a young boy in Littlehampton.
Matthew Johnston, from Tottenham, London, began grooming his victim in 2014 when the child was just four years old. Over several years, he subjected the boy to repeated rapes and assaults.
Star Wars Fan Events Used to Target Young Victim
Johnston exploited Comic-Con-style events—including Star Wars and superhero meet-ups—as a cover to groom and abuse the child. These fan gatherings gave him the perfect opportunity to manipulate the boy.
The abuse only surfaced in December 2024 when it was reported to Sussex Police. A specialist team launched a full investigation and supported the victim and his family throughout the traumatic ordeal.
Hove Crown Court Convicts on Multiple Charges
Johnston was arrested and charged with:
- Two counts of rape of a child under 13
- Two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13
- Two counts of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity
- One count of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child
On Friday 10 October, he was found guilty on all counts. On Monday 23 March, the court handed down a 16-year prison sentence plus five years on extended licence for being a dangerous offender.
He also received an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a Restraining Order, and will be on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
Detective Praises Victim’s Family for Bravery
“Matthew Johnston groomed, manipulated and abused this young victim over many years, betraying the trust of the child and his family,” said Detective Constable Jacob Parkin. “My thanks go to the victim and his family for their strength throughout this investigation. Bringing a dangerous offender to justice wouldn’t have been possible without their bravery.” “If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual abuse, contact Sussex Police. We are here to support and fight for justice.”
