Drivers caught reversing on the A2 hard shoulder to dodge traffic jams face hefty fines following a serious crash near Gravesend.

Crash Sparks Traffic Nightmare

On Sunday 23 November 2025, emergency services rushed to a major collision on the A2 Watling Street coastbound involving two cars and an HGV. The crash caused inevitable delays as crews worked to help those involved and clear the scene.

Drivers Break the Law to Escape Gridlock

Frustrated by the hold-up, some motorists risked it all by reversing along the hard shoulder to get back to an earlier slip road. A few even attempted to turn around on this restricted lane.

Kent Police Crack Down

Kent Police’s Roads Policing Unit was on-site managing traffic when they spotted the offenders. Sixteen drivers have now been reported for these offences, each facing a £100 fine and three penalty points on their licence.

“Those using the hard shoulder for anything other than a lawful reason could obstruct emergency vehicles heading towards a serious collision, impacting injured drivers,” said Inspector David Crompton.“These motorists were reported just 13 minutes before the road reopened, so a bit more patience could have saved them a fine and penalty points.”

Officials remind drivers that hard shoulders are strictly for emergencies and misuse can delay vital help from reaching crash victims.
