Massive Blaze Brings Dhaka Airport to a Halt
A huge fire ripped through Bangladesh’s busiest airport, Hazrat Shahjalal International in Dhaka, on Saturday. Flames engulfed the cargo terminal, grinding both domestic and international flights to a halt and sparking chaos for travellers.
Armed Forces Join Firefighters in Fierce Battle
Thirty-six fire teams, backed by the army, navy, and air force, launched an all-out assault to contain the inferno. Fire Service spokesperson Talha Bin Zasim confirmed the massive effort. Airport official Masudul Hasan assured the public all aircraft on site are safe, but admitted airport operations remain suspended.
Flights Diverted as Airspace Descends into Chaos
- An IndiGo flight from Delhi was forced to divert to Kolkata.
- An Air Arabia plane from Sharjah rerouted to Chittagong.
- A Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong circled overhead after failing to land.
Recent Fires Raise Fresh Worries Across Bangladesh
The cause of the airport blaze is still unknown. This devastating fire follows two deadly factory fires this week—one at a garment factory that killed at least 16 and another in Chittagong’s export zone.
“Thirty-six firefighting units are working to douse the flames,” said Talha Bin Zasim.
