Massive Blaze Erupts on Richmond Road, Twickenham – People Trapped Inside

A huge fire has ripped through a commercial building on Richmond Road in Twickenham. Emergency services confirm there are people trapped inside.

Blazing Inferno Sparks Major Emergency Response

The London Fire Brigade raced to the scene just before 5pm on Friday, 18 July. They deployed ten fire engines and a towering aerial ladder to battle the blaze. Around 70 firefighters, decked out in breathing apparatus, are tackling the flames both inside and outside the building.

A large police cordon is in place, with Richmond Road shut both ways to give crews full access. Commuters face serious delays.

Smoke Billows from Historic Leatherworks Building

Witnesses at the scene report thick, choking smoke pouring from the roof of the 19th-century leatherworks site. The London Fire Brigade has dispatched a specialist Fire Rescue Unit and Command Support Teams to assist in the complex fire.

Ambulance and Police Rush to Rescue Efforts

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and officers from the Metropolitan Police are on site, aiding evacuations and treating any casualties. It remains unclear how many people were inside when the fire broke out or if there are any serious injuries.

Public Urged to Stay Clear Amid Thick Smoke

Residents and nearby businesses have been told to keep windows and doors firmly shut due to hazardous smoke in the air. Authorities urge everyone to avoid the area while emergency services battle the fire.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters are tackling a fire on Richmond Road in East Twickenham. The mixed-use building is producing a large amount of smoke. Please keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area. Road closures on Richmond Road are causing significant traffic disruption.”

The first emergency call was received at 4.38pm, with crews quickly mobilised from fire stations including Richmond, Twickenham, Chiswick, and Acton. A 32-metre turntable ladder from Clapham station is also assisting.

Stay tuned for updates as firefighters continue their intense efforts to control the blaze.
