Huge Blaze Erupts on Wanstead Flats – Residents Told Stay Indoors
Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are battling a massive fire on Wanstead Flats tonight (Monday 11 August).
Emergency Services Flood the Scene After Dozens of Calls
London Fire Brigade (LFB) was scrambled at 6:44pm following more than 30 calls from the public reporting thick smoke and flames spreading across the open grassland.
Fire crews from Leytonstone, Stratford, Leyton, and nearby stations rushed to the scene to tackle the fierce blaze. Authorities have warned local residents to keep all doors and windows shut to avoid the choking smoke.
Public Urged to Avoid Wanstead Flats as Fire Rages
LFB urged everyone to steer clear of the area to aid firefighting efforts and for public safety.
There’s currently no word on what sparked the fire, but dry summer conditions are fuelling fears it could spread rapidly over the popular open space.
Wanstead Flats, part of Epping Forest, is a hotspot for walkers, cyclists, and families during summer. Fires here often stem from discarded barbecues, litter, or sometimes arson, making them an annual headache.
LFB Plea and Ongoing Situation
“We have eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters responding to a grass fire on Wanstead Flats. Please keep doors and windows closed if you are nearby, and avoid the area where possible,” a London Fire Brigade spokesperson said.
So far, no injuries have been reported. The fire is still raging, with updates expected later this evening.
