Wigan Doctor Jailed for Sexually Assaulting Patients During Consultations
Vijay Gaikwad, a former GP from Lowton, has been slammed with a six-year prison sentence for multiple sexual assaults committed during medical appointments. The 44-year-old, who abused his position of trust, was sentenced at court following the brave testimony of his victims.
Survivors Praise and Police Support
“Firstly, I would like to extend my gratitude to the victims who bravely came forward to report the incidents, despite the significant emotional distress they experienced,” said DC Page.
“Gaikwad abused his position of trust in the most egregious manner, and today’s outcome reflects the seriousness of his actions. This sentencing will provide some sense of justice for the victims.”
DC Page also urged other victims to speak out: “Time is no barrier when it comes to being sexually abused. No matter how long ago it was, or how old you were at the time, we will listen to you. We will support you, investigate, and act robustly against perpetrators.”
Community Outraged Over Sentence
The six-year sentence has divided opinion, with many questioning whether it truly fits the severity of Gaikwad’s crimes. The ex-doctor is now banned from practising medicine and will stay on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
Greater Manchester Police have called on anyone affected by similar abuse to come forward and seek support.
