Northumbria Police have launched an attempted murder investigation after a 15-year-old boy was seriously injured in a stabbing at Herrington Country Park in Sunderland.

Emergency services were called to nearby Margaret Terrace in New Herrington at approximately 6:10pm on Friday evening (6 June), where the injured teenager was found with serious injuries consistent with a bladed article.

The incident is believed to have occurred shortly before 6pm within the country park.


Three Teenagers Arrested

Following the assault, police arrested three teenagers:

  • Two 16-year-old boys

  • One 15-year-old girl

All three were initially arrested on suspicion of assault, but have since been re-arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They remain in police custody for further questioning.


Victim in Hospital, Stable Condition

The victim was transported to hospital and remains in stable condition. Thankfully, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.

Early enquiries suggest the victim and suspects may be known to each other, though officers are still working to establish the full circumstances.


Police Appeal for Witnesses

Northumbria Police believe there may be witnesses who were in Herrington Country Park at the time of the incident, which occurred in a public area known to be busy in the early evening.

“We are urging anyone who was in the park around 6pm and saw anything suspicious to come forward,” a police spokesperson said.

Searches are ongoing in the park and surrounding areas, and a visible police presence is being maintained to reassure the public.
