A burglar has been caught in the act of stealing cigarettes from a Tesco Express store in Dartford after police responded to an overnight alarm.

Kent Police officers were dispatched to Tesco Express on Henderson Drive at around 1.45am on Sunday, 25 May, following reports of a break-in.

Upon arrival, officers found a smashed window and observed movement inside the premises.

The suspect, identified as Tom O’Neil, 41, of Baden Road, Gillingham, surrendered to officers without resistance.

Caught on CCTV Armed with a Shovel

CCTV footage later revealed O’Neil had entered the store with a shovel and duvet cover, which he used in his attempt to steal multiple packs of cigarettes. He was also seen vaulting the counter to gain access to the tobacco area.

O’Neil was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with burglary.

Court Appearance and Bail

He pleaded guilty to the charge at Medway Magistrates’ Court, and was conditionally bailed ahead of a sentencing hearing scheduled for Thursday, 24 July.
