Channel 4’s beloved architectural series Grand Designs is back for its 25th season, and the new episodes are already delivering the mix of ambition, emotion, and nail-biting setbacks that fans have come to expect.

This week’s episode introduces viewers to Kathryn, an 82-year-old widow from London, who embarks on a deeply personal and ambitious project: building an ultra-sustainable, accessible home just steps from where she has lived for over six decades.

Kathryn, who lost her husband Jon after 60 years together, is now struggling with the stairs in their Edwardian home. But rather than leave the street she loves, she hatches a bold plan to stay rooted in her community while accommodating her changing needs.

Reimagining Home in Later Life

Kathryn’s vision is to demolish the garage next to her house and build a modern, accessible version of her Edwardian property—one that can support her mobility and sustainability goals in equal measure.

“It’s about building something that works for me now and for the future,” Kathryn tells presenter Kevin McCloud, who admits he’s both impressed and concerned by the scale of the task ahead.

Challenges and Setbacks

As with many Grand Designs projects, the path is anything but smooth. Kathryn’s build quickly encounters obstacles, including unexpectedly deep foundations, persistent wet weather, and rising costs that threaten the already tight budget and schedule.

Kevin watches the build unfold with a mix of admiration and worry. “It’s a courageous decision,” he notes in the episode. “Kathryn is taking on a project many people half her age wouldn’t dare attempt.”

A Touching Tribute and a New Chapter

Throughout the episode, viewers get a glimpse into Kathryn’s life and love for her late husband Jon, as well as her determination to carry on living independently and meaningfully. Her build is as much a tribute to their life together as it is a step into her future.

Fans of the show have taken to social media to express their admiration, with one viewer on X (formerly Twitter) writing: “Kathryn is an inspiration—what a beautiful idea to stay near the memories, but in a home that supports her needs.”

What’s Next on Grand Designs?

Kathryn’s story follows a strong start to the new season. In the first two episodes, viewers met:

  • Sarah and Howard from Worthing, who built a futuristic “floating” home, and
  • Sarah and Pip in Bedfordshire, who revived a rickety old barn into a warm family space.

Next week promises another unique journey into the world of self-builders as Kevin continues his tour across the UK.

Grand Designs airs Wednesdays at 9pm on Channel 4 and is available to stream on All4.
