Over 250 Migrants Sue UK Government Over Manston Detention Nightmare

More than 250 migrants held at the infamous Manston asylum centre in Kent are launching a legal battle against the UK government. They claim they were subjected to unlawful detention and gross breaches of their human rights during their time at the centre in autumn 2022.

Manston was condemned as “a humanitarian crisis on British soil” after reports of dangerous overcrowding and infectious disease outbreaks rocked the makeshift facility.

Horrific Allegations from Vulnerable Migrants

The migrants—many of whom are victims of torture and trafficking—say they endured filthy, overcrowded conditions with barely enough food, no proper showers, and no fresh clothes. Some describe being falsely imprisoned and abandoned by a government that ignored their basic rights.

  • A 19-year-old Sudanese torture and trafficking survivor was held for a staggering 33 days in relentless squalor, often hungry, with no proper hygiene, and was even told to “go back to your country.”
  • A 17-year-old Kurdish boy from Iraq was wrongly labelled an adult and jailed for 12 days, his real age ignored despite protests.
  • A woman suffered a miscarriage while detained at Manston.
  • A teenage torture victim who also survived trafficking is among those suing.

Lawyers Slam ‘Inhumane’ Conditions

Legal teams are warning Manston’s treatment of asylum seekers violates the European Convention on Human Rights. Emily Soothill of Deighton Pierce Glynn said:

“We consider that our clients were falsely imprisoned. The conditions they endured at Manston were inhumane and a clear breach of their human rights. Asylum seekers are vulnerable and deserve dignity—not detention in squalor.”

Wilsons solicitor Jed Pennington added:

“The humanitarian disaster at Manston last autumn is shocking for a country with established refugee systems. Our clients demand answers—who allowed this to happen, and how will it be stopped from happening again?”

Manston: Crisis Centre in the Spotlight

Originally designed as a temporary processing hub, Manston spiralled into controversy amid tales of overcrowding and disease. The Home Office says it is reviewing the claims and promises safe, humane conditions but has yet to directly address the explosive accusations.

Political Storm and Public Outcry

The lawsuit has ignited fierce debate. Critics argue migrants crossing the Channel illegally should not be allowed to sue, while others insist humanitarian standards must apply to all.

“Migrants suing the UK government for poor conditions after illegally crossing? That’s a joke. What about citizens’ rights?” one commentator raged.

“Basic human rights don’t vanish because of immigration status. The UK owes humane treatment to everyone,” countered another.

What’s Next for Manston and Migrants?

This landmark case could force major changes in how Britain detains migrants. Success may see compensation deals and a government shake-up on migrant policies.

The Home Office vows to improve Manston but faces ongoing pressure from human rights groups and politicians urging better protection for vulnerable asylum seekers.

As the court battle unfolds, all eyes remain fixed on Britain’s migrant system—will it finally meet international human rights standards or continue to spark controversy?
