Health Officials Warn of Risks to Vulnerable Groups Amid Drop in Temperatures

Londoners are being urged to prepare for freezing temperatures after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued a Yellow Cold-Health Alert for the capital. The warning will remain in place for five days, starting from 9 AM on Friday, February 7, until 9 AM on Tuesday, February 11.

The alert, issued in partnership with the Met Office, warns that the sudden drop in temperatures is likely to place additional strain on health services while increasing the risks for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Health Risks and Precautionary Measures

The UKHSA has cautioned that cold weather can have serious health consequences, particularly for those with conditions such as asthma, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at the UKHSA, urged residents to take precautions:

“Cold weather can have a serious impact on health, particularly for older and vulnerable people. If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over 65, it is important to keep your home heated to at least 18°C, wear warm clothing, and seek help if needed.”

Residents are advised to:
Keep indoor temperatures at 18°C or higher, particularly in living areas
Dress in layers and wear warm clothing, including hats and gloves when going outside
Check on elderly neighbours, family, and friends who may need assistance
Use hot water bottles or electric blankets (if safe) to keep warm at night
Seek medical advice if feeling unwell due to cold-related symptoms
