Arson Alert: Flames Rip Through Steyning Flats in Dead of Night

Emergency crews stormed St Cuthman’s Road, Steyning, after a blaze tore through a block of flats just after midnight on December 10. The fire, which erupted around 12:29 a.m., triggered a major rescue operation involving firefighters, paramedics, and cops. Authorities are now probing the inferno as a deliberate act.

Heroic Rescue Saves Eight Trapped Residents

Dozens of emergency workers fought the fire and carried out daring rescues. Firefighters scaled ladders to pull eight people from upper floors, avoiding any injuries. A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said:

“Four fire engines were dispatched. The ground and first floors were badly affected. Crews used front and rear ladders to get everyone out safely.”

After four intense hours, firefighters gained control of the blaze, wrapping up operations by 4:20 a.m.

Police on Arson Hunt

Sussex Police confirmed the fire is being treated as arson. An officer announced:

“Police supported West Sussex Fire and Rescue at the scene. The blaze is now an active investigation into deliberate ignition.”
