A 74-year-old man who tragically died after being struck by a bus in Edinburgh has been identified as Michael Leneghen. The fatal accident occurred on Saturday night in the Cowgate area of the Scottish capital, leading to a disturbing scene that has since circulated on social media.

In a statement, Mr. Leneghen’s family expressed their gratitude to those who assisted at the scene and requested privacy during this difficult time. “We wish to thank all the members of the public and emergency services involved. We would now ask for privacy at this time,” they said.

Sergeant Paul Ewing from the Edinburgh Road Policing Unit extended condolences to the family and confirmed that investigations are ongoing. “Our thoughts remain with Michael’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by this tragic incident,” he said. Ewing also urged anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police to come forward, referencing incident number 3395 of Saturday, 2 November 2024.

The graphic nature of the accident, which resulted in reports of a severed head, has unfortunately led to footage circulating online. Shocked Halloween revellers initially mistook the horrific scene for a Halloween decoration, sparking distress among those who viewed the video.

Chief Inspector Trisha Clark, the local area commander, has urged the public to refrain from sharing these images and videos, noting the impact on Mr. Leneghen’s family. “We are aware of videos and images circulating on social media which are causing distress to the deceased’s family and those viewing them inadvertently. We ask the public not to share them out of respect for his family, and to report them to social media platforms to prevent further circulation.”

Police continue to review CCTV footage and speak to witnesses as they work to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy. Anyone with further information is encouraged to contact Police Scotland via 101.
