Fire Breaks Out at Derelict Ocean Hotel in Sandown

Fire crews rushed to the scene of a blaze at the abandoned Ocean Hotel in Sandown this evening. Emergency services were called shortly after 7pm, with fire engines from Sandown and Newport, plus the Aerial Ladder Platform from Ryde, arriving fast. Hampshire & Isle of Wight police officers soon followed to secure the area.

Smoke Seen Pouring from Second Floor of Abandoned Hotel

Firefighters used ladders to reach the second floor, where the fire is thought to have started. Although no flames were visible, thick smoke poured out of broken windows and doors facing High Street. The burning smell heavily filled the evening air, sparking local concern.

High Street Shut & Bus Routes Diverted Amid Firefighting

High Street remains closed to all traffic as crews battle to douse the flames, drawing water from nearby hydrants. This has caused disruption to Southern Vectis Route 3 buses, which are now on local diversions while emergency teams work.

Cause of Fire Unknown – Residents Urged to Steer Clear

Authorities have yet to determine what sparked the fire at the derelict hotel. They are warning locals and passersby to avoid the area to let fire crews handle the situation safely and swiftly.
