£525 Million Floods UK Farms with Final BPS Payments!
The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) has just dropped a cash bomb on UK farmers, handing out a massive £525 million in their last round of Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) payments. This hefty boost is a lifeline for the struggling rural economy and a clear sign of the government’s ongoing pledge to back the agricultural sector.
Quick Stats on the Payment Push
- 97% of farmers got their final BPS cash within days of the payment window opening.
- More than 91,000 claims across BPS, Countryside Stewardship (CS), and Environmental Stewardship (ES) have been processed.
- An extra £70 million from the Environmental Stewardship scheme is on the way soon.
Backing Farmers & Boosting Green Farming
These payments aren’t just a financial windfall. They’re part of the government’s push to keep farmers profitable and productive despite tough conditions. Plus, they’re designed to encourage eco-friendly farming practices that protect the environment while supporting rural livelihoods.
Early Payouts to Help Cash Flow
Farmers clamoured for faster payments – and the RPA listened. Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) payments are now released early. If you signed an SFI 2023 deal before year-end, expect a quick payout worth 25% of your yearly agreement in the very first month.
RPA Boss: Payments Vital Amid Challenges
Paul Caldwell, RPA Chief Executive, said: “These payments are crucial for supporting farmers and rural businesses through a challenging year. Looking ahead, we’re shifting to delinked payments to maintain support while encouraging sustainable land management.”
What Are Delinked Payments?
From 2024, England will see BPS replaced by delinked payments running until 2027. These will be based on the average BPS payments made from 2020 to 2022. If you claimed and qualified for the 2023 BPS, you’ll automatically get these new payments – no extra hoops to jump through.
Final Payments on Course by June
The RPA aims to clear all Countryside and Environmental Stewardship plus final BPS 2023 payments by 30 June 2024. Farmers should double-check their bank details with the RPA to avoid hold-ups.
