Senior Detective Opens Up About Harrowing Shooting at Omagh Sports Complex

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell has revealed the traumatic ordeal he and innocent children endured when he was shot at a sports complex in Omagh, County Tyrone. Speaking at the Sunday Life’s Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards, Caldwell shared his sorrow that even children, including his own son, witnessed the horror firsthand.

Honouring Bravery and Outstanding Medical Care

Caldwell was honoured with a special award and paid tribute to the courageous emergency workers who helped him on the night of the attack. “Their bravery in the face of danger saved lives,” he said, thanking medical staff for their exceptional care during his recovery.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, in a pre-recorded message, hailed Caldwell as a “true hero of Northern Ireland,” praising his unwavering dedication to his community. This marked the detective’s second public appearance since leaving hospital.

Royal Meet and Ongoing Justice

During his recovery, Det Ch Insp Caldwell met privately with King Charles on the monarch’s first official visit to Northern Ireland since his coronation. PSNI Chief Constable Simon Byrne also lauded Caldwell’s resilience and determination.

The attack has been claimed by the New IRA, a dissident republican group. Seven suspects have been charged and await their hearing at Omagh Magistrates’ Court on June 27, as the community hopes for justice to be served.
