Grimsby Man Jailed for Setting Convenience Store Ablaze
A 49-year-old man has been locked up for three years after a shocking arson attack at a busy Grimsby convenience store.
Deliberate Fire in Busy Nisa Store
Steven Caldwell, from Tunnard Street in Grimsby, appeared at Grimsby Crown Court last Friday for sentencing. He was charged with arson over the incident that took place on May 24, 2022.
At around 1.30pm, Caldwell entered the Nisa store on Victor Street. Unprovoked, he set bags of BBQ charcoal alight before tossing paper onto the burning charcoal, all while grinning up at the CCTV camera. He then fled the shop, unaware that staff had been alerted to the fire.
Quick-Thinking Staff Prevent Disaster
Detective Constable Andrew Taylor, who led the investigation, praised the staff’s swift response. “Luckily, staff were promptly alerted to the fire and managed to extinguish it before anyone was seriously injured,” he said.
“This was a reckless attack,” DC Taylor added. “We hope the court’s verdict reassures the community that we are committed to taking swift action against serious offenders and bringing them to justice.”
The sentence sends a strong message that dangerous crimes won’t be tolerated on Grimsby’s streets.
