Around 2.50 a.m., a two-vehicle collision occurred near the Stoke slip road.
Officers responded to numerous reports of a silver Mercedes driving in the wrong direction on the northbound carriageway. After that, the Mercedes collided with a vehicle travelling in the correct direction.
The Mercedes was driven by a woman in her forties. She was treated at the scene but sadly died shortly afterwards. Her relatives are aware.
The front seat passenger suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The driver of the second car was injured less seriously.
The road has now reopened completely, but it was closed for several hours while emergency personnel dealt with the incident. The air ambulance was also present.
