Tragic death after pony and trap crash in Bursledon

Police have identified the man who died in a fatal crash involving a pony and trap in Bursledon on Sunday night.

Deadly crash on Portsmouth Road

Officers were called to Portsmouth Road shortly after 11.30pm on March 26 following reports of a collision between a Volkswagen Bora and a pony and trap.

William Gaskin, 33, from Worplesdon, Guildford, was travelling in the trap. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Southampton General Hospital, where he later died.

Driver arrested over deadly collision

The driver of the Volkswagen escaped injury. Meanwhile, a 28-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been bailed until July 26 pending further inquiries.

Police appeal for witnesses

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or saw either vehicle beforehand to come forward.
