Portchester Man Jailed for Vicious Road Rage Assault with Steering Lock
A 34-year-old man from Portchester has been locked up for 33 months after brutally attacking a 66-year-old driver with a metal steering lock during a shocking road rage incident.
Attack Followed Traffic Row on A27
Malcolm Dutton of Wagtail Way pleaded guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court on March 1 to causing grievous bodily harm without intent. The court handed down his sentence on March 24.
The terrifying assault happened just before 5pm on August 28, 2015. After a heated dispute on the busy A27 between Fareham and Portchester, Dutton confronted the victim and repeatedly smashed him on the head with the steering lock.
Victim Left Bloodied, But Surviving
The victim suffered serious head injuries that needed hospital treatment. Thanks to quick thinking from two witnesses who intervened, the attack didn’t turn even more deadly. The injured man is now recovering at home.
Police Crackdown on Road Rage Violence
“This was a particularly nasty attack with a weapon that was totally unprovoked,” said DC Duncan, the investigating officer. “I’m pleased the sentence reflects the seriousness of this brutal assault which was extremely traumatic for the victim.
“Thanks to the intervention of witnesses, the injuries were not worse. Road rage like this will not be tolerated. This case sends a clear message: we will investigate and prosecute anyone involved in such serious violence.”
