Morrisons is set to shut down a whopping 103 locations across the UK — including stores, cafes, florists, and pharmacies — as part of a major shake-up this year.
Biggest Cuts Hit Cafes and Convenience Stores
The supermarket giant initially revealed plans to close 50 of its cafes nationwide. But the cull doesn’t stop there. Morrisons will also axe:
- 17 daily convenience stores
- 13 florists
- 4 pharmacies
- All 18 Market Kitchens, their fresh in-store dining spots
- 35 meat counters and 35 fish counters
The closures, part of a ‘programme of renewal’, come amid rising costs and financial pressures hitting British high streets hard.
CEO: “Necessary to Focus on What Customers Truly Value”
Morrisons CEO Rami Baitiéh stressed these cuts are needed to “renew and reinvigorate Morrisons” and concentrate investment on core areas that drive growth.
“Morrisons Cafés are rightly famous for great value and quality food,” Baitiéh said. “Most will have a bright future, but a handful face local challenges forcing closures and space reallocation.”
He also hinted that third-party partnerships might bring specialist offers to some locations.
Financial Woes Behind the Move
Morrisons reported a £919million loss last year following an even bigger £1.3billion deficit in 2023. Despite that, the retailer posted a pre-tax profit of £2.1billion for the year ending October 2024.
“Consumers are feeling the squeeze,” Baitiéh added. “We’re working to help customers with tight budgets while handling rising costs triggered by unexpected government measures.”
Communities Feel the Blow
Consumer group Which? warned the cuts to Morrisons cafés will hit local communities and leave fewer affordable dining options amid cost-of-living pressures.
“Supermarket cafes offer great value, especially with popular ‘kids eat free’ deals,” said Reena Sewraz. “Closing 50 cafés limits choices for consumers.”
