Snapped in the Act on Villett Street
On Monday 20 October, officers spotted 47-year-old Downes from Gorse Hill attempting to nick a bicycle. They swooped in, arrested him on the spot, and scuppered the crime before it was completed.
Guilty Plea and Swift Justice
Downes quickly appeared in Swindon Magistrates Court the following day. He pleaded guilty to going equipped to steal and admitting to a bike theft from 17 October. The judge slammed him with a 28-week jail term.
Back Behind Bars for Previous Crime
That’s not all — Downes was also recalled to prison for breaching a previous licence. A known repeat offender, his latest haul attempt proved the last straw.
Neighbourhood Sgt Ed Rogers said: “Officers stopped Downes in his tracks on Monday, preventing the theft of a community member’s bike. Thanks to decisive police action, he’s now behind bars.”
“Downes is a prolific offender among a small group hell-bent on crime in our town centres. We’re dead serious about stamping out this behaviour to keep Swindon safe and welcoming for all.”
