Fire Chief Warns: Play It Safe This Firework Season

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Paul Askew urged Londoners to stay safe:

“Following a busy week of fireworks-related calls and incidents, we’re urging Londoners to attend safer, organised fireworks displays this year.

If you’re hosting your own show, buy fireworks from licensed sellers with a CE safety mark. Secure them firmly in the ground and keep them well away from buildings, trees, animals and people.

Always follow the Fireworks Code and remember the strict laws on when you can purchase and use fireworks. Never light them if you’ve been drinking and don’t return to a lit firework.

Disposing of fireworks safely is just as crucial. Allow them to cool completely before throwing them away.”

London Fire Brigade Calls Surge Amid Fireworks Frenzy

The fire at Cotmans Close is one of many this weekend. The London Fire Brigade revealed they’ve received more than 1,300 calls since Friday, with multiple fireworks-related blazes. Fires have ranged from bins and trees going up in flames to fireworks accidentally detonating inside buildings.
