An Emirates SkyCargo Boeing 747 operated by Turkish carrier Air ACT smashed off the runway and plunged into the sea at Hong Kong International Airport early Monday. The dramatic crash left two airport workers missing and sparked a frantic rescue operation.
Runway Disaster at 3:53 a.m.
Flight EK9788, arriving from Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport, landed on Runway 07R at 3:53 a.m. The Boeing 747-481, registered TC-ACF, suddenly veered sharply to the left during its landing roll. It smashed through the seawall and came to rest partly submerged in water.
Crew Safe, But Two Workers Missing After Collision
All four crew members escaped without injury. However, the jet collided with a ground-service vehicle, ripping off one of its wheels. Two airport workers inside that vehicle remain missing as multiple rescue teams, including fire, marine, and the Government Flying Service, scour the area by boat and helicopter.
Airport Chaos and Investigation Underway
- A Cathay Pacific flight trailing behind had to abort its landing due to the sudden incident.
- The north runway at Hong Kong airport has been shut down while crews clear debris and assess damage.
- Aviation authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
Flight tracking data confirms the sudden left veer just after touchdown, raising urgent questions over what went wrong during the landing.
