A Greater Manchester police sergeant has been honoured with the King’s Commendation for Bravery after risking his life to protect a colleague from a knife-wielding attacker.
Quick-Thinking Sgt Tim Ansell Saves Lives
On 26 July 2023, Sgt Tim Ansell was faced with a terrifying scene when a man suddenly attacked his colleague from behind with a knife. Without hesitation, Sgt Ansell threw himself between the assailant and his comrade.
The attacker then turned on Sgt Ansell, stabbing him repeatedly. The officer suffered two open wounds to his neck and several further injuries to his arms and body.
Bravery Under Fire
Despite the brutal assault, Sgt Ansell held firm, grabbing the attacker’s upper body to stop him harming anyone else. Even after being brought to the ground, he kept the attacker’s attention, buying vital time.
This selfless act allowed other officers to step in and deploy a Taser — twice — to finally subdue the dangerous man. The attacker was swiftly restrained and handcuffed.
Recognised as a True Hero
Sgt Ansell and his team had already scored a regional win at last year’s National Police Bravery Awards. Now, the King’s Commendation cements his place among the UK’s bravest.
“Sgt Ansell’s quick thinking and courage saved lives. His actions were nothing short of heroic,” Government officials said.
