A driver has admitted manslaughter over the death of a four-year-old boy in a shocking Southfleet crash that also left the child’s father paralysed from the waist down.
Tragedy on New Barn Road
Owen Maughan, 27, pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court today (October 7) to causing the death of little Peter Maughan on the evening of June 1. The crash involved two Ford Rangers colliding on New Barn Road at around 9.30pm.
Peter’s father, Lovell Mahon, who was driving the other vehicle, suffered life-changing injuries and is now confined to a wheelchair. His one-year-old daughter Annarica and partner Hayley Maughan were also in the car during the collision.
Father to Stand Trial Over Crash
Owen Maughan denied the more serious charge of murder and will face trial next year. His father, Patrick Maughan, also denies murder and manslaughter charges and will stand trial alongside him.
Both men, from Hill Rise, Darenth, were charged following the crash that devastated the family and local community.
Legal Battle Continues
- Owen pleaded guilty to causing serious injury to Lovell Mahon by dangerous driving but denies grievous bodily harm (GBH) charges involving Mr Mahon, Annarica, and Hayley.
- Patrick Maughan denies causing Peter’s death by dangerous driving and multiple GBH charges against Mr Mahon, Annarica, and Hayley.
- Both men remain in custody ahead of their trial, set to begin on February 2, 2026.
Community Mourns “Peter Rabbit”
The young boy, affectionately known as “Peter Rabbit,” died from severe head, chest, and abdominal injuries on the night of the crash. His death has left an irreplaceable void in the family’s life.
“You were golden, Peter. The family chain is broken and will never be the same without you my boy. Forever 4.”
Hundreds turned out in August to pay their respects at Peter’s funeral, where attendees wore baby blue and lemon, his family’s chosen colours. The funeral procession passed the crash site, now lined with floral tributes, before Peter was laid to rest at Stone Cemetery.
The court heard the devastating effects on Lovell Mahon, who has undergone rehabilitation therapy following the crash.
