A303 Bypass Closed After Serious Multi-Vehicle Accident: Two Casualties Airlifted Wiltshire

The A303 Bypass near Cholderton, Wiltshire, has been closed in both directions following a serious multi-vehicle collision on Friday evening. The accident occurred at around 5.30 pm and involved at least two vehicles, leaving several people injured.

Emergency services, including three air ambulances, rushed to the scene just east of Amesbury (pronounced Aims-bree), with the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance all attending. Two casualties were airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southampton General Hospital for urgent medical care.

Due to the severity of the crash, the road remains closed from Parkhouse Corner to the Countess roundabout, Amesbury. Diversion routes have been put in place:

  • Westbound traffic is being directed to exit at Parkhouse Corner onto the A338 towards Salisbury.

  • Eastbound traffic is advised to take the 3rd exit from the roundabout towards Amesbury.

Authorities have launched a full-scale forensic collision investigation, and the road is expected to remain closed until around midday on Saturday (29 March). Motorists are urged to avoid the area and follow the designated diversions.

A spokesperson from Wiltshire Police said: “We are working alongside emergency services to manage the situation and ensure the safety of those involved. The road will remain closed while collision investigators carry out their work.

Drivers are advised to plan alternative routes and check for updates before traveling. Further information will be released as the investigation progresses.
