Man in court over Andover sex attack

A man has today (Thursday 7 March) appeared in Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court charged with non-recent child sex offences following an investigation by Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Marmion Team. Philip Banning, 68, of Meadowlands Close, Penhow, Wales, was charged by postal requisition with 24 counts of indecent assault against girls who were under the age of 16 during the 1970s and 1980s in Andover. The charges relate to incidents alleged to have taken place during Mr Banning’s time as an athletics coach at Andover Athletics Club. He has been bailed to appear at Winchester Crown Court on April 10. We would encourage anyone who has been a victim of child abuse, or has any information about this type of abuse, to contact police on 101. Alternatively contact Child Line on 0800 111 or adults with any concerns about a child can contact 0808 800 550.
